Repainting the inside, the outside, a weatherboard or a roof? Tell us your suburb and the job. Independent painters who work around Launceston may reply with quotes. Free, no obligation.
Each guide covers one kind of painting job, with the heritage notes, the checks to make and the questions to ask before you agree to anything. Pick the closest match to your plans.

The Consumer Building and Occupational Services agency was split in two on 1 October 2026, according to the HIA. Consumer Affairs Tasmania now handles occupational licensing, and Building Standards Tasmania handles building and plumbing standards and residential building disputes. Older pages and search results still carry the previous name, so if you see it, read it as the new agency that covers the topic. The public register at the occupational licensing site is where you can look up local trades, and we link to it because a painting job can involve one: needatradie's Tasmanian guide says electrical, plumbing including roof drainage and gas fitting work need a licence whatever the job is worth. If a quote includes new gutters or downpipes, ask who is doing that part and look at the register yourself.
Launceston is old by Australian standards. Wikipedia says it has many well preserved Victorian and Georgian buildings and is a major location of Federation style housing, with art deco buildings as well. The City of Launceston keeps a Local Heritage Register and says routine maintenance is usually exempt from the development application process. Heritage Tasmania says a place on the Tasmanian Heritage Register can need approval for works, that a minor works approval can be issued for things such as painting, and that an application for repainting should say what the existing finishes are and give full details of the materials and finishes proposed. We cannot tell you whether your home is listed. Ask the council, ask Heritage Tasmania and ask the painter, and do it before you choose a colour, because a strong change on a listed front elevation is the kind of thing that can be questioned.
Three guides give a rough picture, and none is a Launceston quote. Yakka Labour, whose pages we read on 31 October 2026, gives an interior repaint of a three-bedroom single-storey house at $6,000 to $12,000 including GST, with a Hobart row at $6,000 to $11,500. It gives a single-storey brick veneer exterior at $3,500 to $8,000, a single-storey weatherboard at $8,000 to $16,000 and a two-storey weatherboard at $16,000 to $32,000. The Quote Yard, a lead-generation site, gives lower Tasmanian estimates of $4,500 to $9,000 for a three-bedroom interior and $5,000 to $12,000 for a single-storey exterior, and says heritage properties usually attract premium pricing. The cost guide on this site shows every row with its source and unit.
Yakka Labour says preparation is most of a good paint job, and that on an older home the filling, sanding, washing and spot-priming take longer than the painting. It says a big colour change can add 15 to 30 per cent, that many painters charge 10 to 20 per cent more for a furnished home, and that high or raked ceilings and two-storey walls need scaffolding, platforms or a lift. It also says paint and materials are roughly 15 to 25 per cent of the price and labour the rest, which is why two quotes can differ by thousands without either being wrong: one may include two days of preparation and the other none.
Yakka Labour says homes built before about 1970 may have lead-based paint in older layers, especially on trims, windows, doors and exterior weatherboards, and that sanding or scraping it makes toxic dust that is harmful to young children and pregnant women. It says a painter working on an older home should test suspect paint and use lead-safe methods, and it tells you to ask how they handle it. It also says some textured ceilings and fibro eaves in homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and that sanding, scraping or pressure washing it is not. We give no instructions on handling either. Ask each business how it would test, what it would do if it found something and whether that is in the price.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Launceston Airport statistics show about 617 millimetres of rain a year over about 82 rain days, with August the wettest month at about 73 millimetres and February the driest at about 29. The mean maximum is about 18 degrees for the year, 25 in January and 12 in July. The station records about 67 days a year with a minimum of 2 degrees or lower and about 31 days at or below zero, with a lowest recorded temperature of minus 5.6 degrees. Wikipedia says Launceston winters are renowned for foggy mornings. Yakka Labour says paint should not go on exterior surfaces in rain, heavy dew, strong wind or extreme heat, so ask a painter what they would do on a damp morning and what slack is built into the dates.
Yakka Labour says a written painting quote should spell out every room and surface included and what is excluded, the preparation steps, the paint brand, range, sheen and number of coats for each surface, who moves furniture and protects floors, the access equipment for high areas, the start date, duration and payment schedule. It also says to be wary of a lump sum with no breakdown, a price far below the others, cash-only deals or a big deposit before work starts. Compare quotes line by line rather than by the bottom figure, and ask for the same scope from each business so you are comparing the same job.
Yakka Labour says roof painting costs about $15 to $35 per square metre, so a single-storey home with 150 to 200 square metres of roof pays $3,000 to $7,000, and it says paint does not fix leaks. It says asbestos cement roofs cannot be pressure cleaned, because high-pressure water spraying of asbestos is prohibited, and that the roof should be tested before anyone quotes. Our roofing reference goes through this, and it is a good example of why a painter should say what a roof needs before saying what it costs.
We have local guides for Ravenswood, Youngtown, St Leonards, Summerhill, Norwood, Punchbowl, West Launceston and Hadspen. Each uses the suburb's Wikipedia article for local facts and the council, state and published cost pages for the rules, and each says plainly where the source stops. Several of these suburbs were gazetted as localities in 1963, and Wikipedia says Norwood grew considerably in the 1970s and 1980s, but we have no source for the age or the cladding of your house, so check it yourself.
Ask for experience and insurance details, ask whether the home is heritage listed, and ask what preparation, products and coats are quoted. Check any local trade involved on the public register. Keep the quote, the agreement, the photographs and your messages. If something goes wrong, start with the business, then contact Building Standards Tasmania for a residential building dispute or Consumer Affairs Tasmania for a consumer or licensing matter.
Generally not for painting alone. Yakka Labour says there is usually no separate painting licence in Tasmania, and the former CBOS advised checking the person has relevant experience. local trades such as plumbing do need one.
We cannot say. The City of Launceston keeps a Local Heritage Register and Heritage Tasmania keeps the state register. Ask both before choosing a colour.
We have no Launceston prices. Yakka Labour gives $6,000 to $12,000 for a three-bedroom interior nationally, and The Quote Yard gives $4,500 to $9,000 for Tasmania. They are guides, not quotes.
Preparation, coats, access and what is excluded all change the price. Compare line by line.
